Eating for 2 – Junk Food and Pregnancy

A study was done in rats that tried to determine if eating junk food during pregnancy would affect the offspring and their preference of food. It did.

Granted, this study was done in rats, but I’d really like to see what the affect would be in humans. I’ve seen plenty of pregnant mothers eat quite a bit of junk food, and I know it’s not good for the baby…but I wasn’t quite sure if it would affect how they would eat later in life. This study is the first step to showing that.

Of course, rats are instinctive animals, and humans do learn a lot from their environment. So the combination of the mother eating junk food during pregnancy and seeing parents eat unhealthy may set a child up for obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc.

The first step we can take for our children to be healthy is to start eating healthy during pregnancy. If at all possible, I recommend that pregnant mothers not only take the regular pre-natal vitamins, but also take omega 3. If you plan on getting pregnant, take omega-3 and all these vitamins before even getting pregnant. It helps ensure that your body is ready and has all the nutrients it needs to support a fetus.

Here is the study. Enjoy.

Here is the blog that I (my husband) found that had a link to the study.
