Truly Random…

I was browsing this morning’s news, and I couldn’t find anything that inspired me to comment, either harshly or in praise.  I could, of course, continue to go on about high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, phthalates…gardasil…but I’ve not found much in the way of new material in those departments.
I could comment on how researchers are [...]

Another Set of Chemicals to Avoid…

Sodium Benzoate.
This chemical is used as a preservative in fruit juices and sodas to name a couple of items quickly.
Recently this chemical was studied illustrating the effects of sodium benzoate on hyperactivity in children. The study was released in Lancet, a well known medical journal.
Here is a Time article I found on it, and a [...]

Exercise Your Brain…

Literally.
Really.
I came across this article earlier (when I say ‘I,’ I mean my husband) that reported on a study that talked about how the brain gets stronger with physical exercise.  I’m not talking playing chess or sudoku (which was a hobby of mine in the more boring classes I took), but running on a treadmill, [...]

Hormone Therapy – Bad Idea

For a long time, doctors recommended hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to women starting menopause.  The science behind it said that the loss of estrogen produced by the body increased women’s risk of heart attacks and strokes.
HRT seemed to be a viable option to prevent these chronic diseases in women.  Of course, there have been many [...]

Decline in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

This article I found on the MSNBC site talked about how there is a decline in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).  This is mostly due to parental education on how to put their babies to sleep – on their back…never on their stomach.
Click here to read the full story.
So, why is there such a simple [...]

Nutrition Education and Childhood Obesity

“Review Finds Nutrition Education Failing”
I found the above article on Yahoo news (which seems to be my source of news lately), and I found it pretty interesting.
A study showed that just teaching children about nutrition had no significant effect.  Maybe children had a better attitude about fruits and vegetables (whatever that means), but they still [...]

Natural Birth

I don’t have children just yet (just the furry dog/cat variety), but I’m a believer in natural childbirth or home birth.
Let’s look at the drug issue.  When they give epidurals, it blocks sensation from the waist down.  The job of the mother’s body during labor is to contract the muscles in the uterus and the [...]

Omega-3 Brain Power

“Prenatal Omega-3 may boost baby’s brain power”
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Children whose mothers get enough omega-3 fatty acid during pregnancy may have sharper problem-solving skills in infancy, a small study suggests.
Researchers found that 9-month-olds whose mothers had eaten DHA-fortified bars during pregnancy performed better on a test of problem-solving abilities than infants whose mothers [...]

Vaccinations and the Immune System

Earlier I had pasted a link to Dr. Dan Murphy’s summary article on “Early Life Infections Improve the Function of the Immune System.”
In relation to the last post on antibiotic use and asthma, I’m going to repost that article here. Enjoy!
A 1998 article published in the journal THORAX titled Early Childhood Infection [...]
