Soda Bad

That’s all I have to say after reading this blog my husband found.
I know it’s not the most insightful thing in the world, but it really makes me want to not drink soda anymore.

Another Set of Chemicals to Avoid…

Sodium Benzoate.
This chemical is used as a preservative in fruit juices and sodas to name a couple of items quickly.
Recently this chemical was studied illustrating the effects of sodium benzoate on hyperactivity in children. The study was released in Lancet, a well known medical journal.
Here is a Time article I found on it, and a [...]

Random Blog Report: HFCS

So I’ve written quite a bit now about the dangers of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Apparently there is a new study out that links HFCS and diabetes.
The following blog reports on this study.
Here is the article reported on in the blog.
A lot of it talks about science that I don’t understand, but thats [...]

Diet and Regular Soda = Same Problems!

So finally…someone did a study showing that diet soda and regular soda cause weight gain, heart disease, and all kinds of other problems.  Soda consumption, in general…causes problems.  I guess we had to spend money to figure that one out.
HOWEVER…this article failed to talk about high fructose corn syrup (in the regular sodas) and aspartame [...]

Nutrition Education and Childhood Obesity

“Review Finds Nutrition Education Failing”
I found the above article on Yahoo news (which seems to be my source of news lately), and I found it pretty interesting.
A study showed that just teaching children about nutrition had no significant effect.  Maybe children had a better attitude about fruits and vegetables (whatever that means), but they still [...]

Randomosity in Series: Toxic/Chemical Stress

Now it’s on to the topic of chemical stress.
Chemical stressors consist of anything we digest, inhale, or absorb through the skin.
Let’s start with the digestion of chemical stressors.  Well…we’ve covered high fructose corn syrup and aspartame already.  HFCS (just as a refresher) is linked to diabetes, obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, just to name a [...]

Experiment in HFCS: Failed!

Well, I knew this weekend would be a tough weekend for me. I went up to Michigan for my brother’s wedding. We drove up too, a nice 12 hour drive with a 1 year old German shepherd in the backseat that requires some caffeine. I knew I wasn’t going to find organic [...]

High Fructose Corn Syrup – What is it?

Since it seems like a lot of people are trying to figure out what HFCS is and are trying to get some facts about it, I’ll do my best to present some of it here.
Essentially, HFCS is made from when they process corn syrups (which are 100% glucose) to make the fructose content higher.  There [...]

Experiment in HFCS: Update

Well…
So me and an online buddy are boycotting HFCS and Aspartame until the end of the month.  It’s kind of hard to avoid at times, especially when eating out…but totally doable.  I didn’t consume a whole lot to begin with, but there have been a couple of moments of weakness.  One…the hubby was craving something [...]

Experiment in High Fructose Corn Syrup and Aspartame

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and Aspartame are in sooooo many of our foods that it is pretty appalling.  The side effects that these things cause range from diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity…etc, etc.
Even though the makers of both of these products, especially aspartame, promote that it has fewer calories than sugar, they [...]
