Nutritioning

Welcome to a new era in health!  Okay, that may be a bit grandiose, but I’m determined to be like Stephen Colbert and start making up my own words.
Nutritioning is my answer to ‘dieting.’  I’d love to throw this whole concept of dieting out the window, because it ultimately doesn’t work and can lead to [...]

Eating for 2 – Junk Food and Pregnancy

A study was done in rats that tried to determine if eating junk food during pregnancy would affect the offspring and their preference of food. It did.
Granted, this study was done in rats, but I’d really like to see what the affect would be in humans. I’ve seen plenty of pregnant mothers eat [...]

The New Epidemic

Obesity.
Not just adults anymore, but children as well.
The newest most overweight state is Mississippi, with over 30% of its adults being obese.  Obesity is a notch above being overweight.  D.C. has over 20% of its children being overweight.
This should make people take notice.  I heard somewhere (I forgot where) that this generation of children will [...]

Diet and Regular Soda = Same Problems!

So finally…someone did a study showing that diet soda and regular soda cause weight gain, heart disease, and all kinds of other problems.  Soda consumption, in general…causes problems.  I guess we had to spend money to figure that one out.
HOWEVER…this article failed to talk about high fructose corn syrup (in the regular sodas) and aspartame [...]

Yet Another Drug…

Avandia, a drug that helps with Type 2 Diabetes, is under review.  It has been linked recently to an increase in heart disease…with a population that is already at risk for heart disease too.    It has been on the market for 8 years (as stated in the article below), so who knows how many extra [...]

Nutrition Education and Childhood Obesity

“Review Finds Nutrition Education Failing”
I found the above article on Yahoo news (which seems to be my source of news lately), and I found it pretty interesting.
A study showed that just teaching children about nutrition had no significant effect.  Maybe children had a better attitude about fruits and vegetables (whatever that means), but they still [...]

Not Too Late for Exercise

I just read a couple of health related news stories, and they pretty much said the most obvious things.  A couple were related to exercise and control of Type 2 diabetes (adult onset), helping to rehab people who have had strokes, and heart disease.  Well….duh.
I found this article (which I’ve copied below) talking how it [...]

Random New Surgeries

“Could nerve-snipping spur weight loss?”
That’s the title of an article that I found on Yahoo news today.
In the surgery, they cut the vagus nerve to decrease appetite.  The vagus nerve is a cranial nerve and innervates many different organs, including the heart, lungs, stomach, etc.  I just have to wonder if this is the best [...]

Randomosity in Series: Toxic/Chemical Stress

Now it’s on to the topic of chemical stress.
Chemical stressors consist of anything we digest, inhale, or absorb through the skin.
Let’s start with the digestion of chemical stressors.  Well…we’ve covered high fructose corn syrup and aspartame already.  HFCS (just as a refresher) is linked to diabetes, obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, just to name a [...]

Childhood Obesity

“Dramatic Rise in U.S. Kids Hospitalized for Type II Diabetes”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20070506/hl_hsn/dramaticriseinuskidshospitalizedfortype2diabetes;_ylt=AlbtgLQBIt7XWHvI4sbufknVJRIF
This article presents some statistics on the increase of Type II diabetes in children. This type of diabetes is directly related to obesity, whereas Type I is an auto-immune related disorder that children get. Type II diabetes used to be a problem of adults, [...]
